UM Shark Research Web Redesign MockUp

University of Miami

Challenge: Modernize the UM SRC website to better reflect its status as a world-class research institution.

Solution: Implemented a media-first design language. By shifting to a full-screen video background and a transparent navigation layer, I eliminated the visual “header” barrier, allowing the user to feel immediately part of the research environment. The integration of a dynamic carousel ensures high-priority content remains accessible without cluttering the sleek, academic aesthetic.

Key Design Features

  • Cinematic Hero Experience: Replaced static imagery with a full-bleed background video, instantly grounding the user in the underwater world. This creates an immediate emotional connection and showcases the field research in real-time.

  • Minimalist Floating Navigation: Implemented a transparent navigation menu that floats over the hero media. This reduces visual clutter and ensures that the striking shark imagery remains the primary focus while maintaining easy access to key pages.

  • Dynamic Homepage Carousel: Integrated a sleek carousel system to highlight various research initiatives, allowing for multiple high-priority stories to be featured without overwhelming the user interface.

  • Institutional Alignment: Refined the color palette to more closely align with the official University of Miami brand identity. Using the iconic orange and green as accents against a deep oceanic blue creates a professional, “academic-meets-adventure” aesthetic.
